The Traditional Game of Satur Karo: Perspectives from the Berastagi Community

Satur Karo,, traditional games, culture, preservation, local wisdomAbstract
The traditional game of Satur Karo, a chess-like board game, is part of the Karo people's cultural heritage, reflecting historical, social, and collective creativity values. However, its sustainability faces challenges in the modern era, particularly in urban areas such as Berastagi City, due to the dominance of digital entertainment and limited scientific documentation. This study aims to analyze public perceptions of Satur Karo, examine its production methods, and identify the cultural and social values embodied in the game's practices. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with an oral history framework. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory and non-participatory observation, visual documentation, and literature review. Data validity was strengthened through triangulation of sources and methods and verification of information coherence. Data analysis was conducted inductively based on key themes, including the game's origins, rule flexibility, and social interaction. The results indicate that Satur Karo has significant social, psychological, and educational functions, reflected in four rule systems (ombang): Sikaelung, Sitempungan, Simurjah, and Simboyanak. All four emphasize strategy, creativity, cooperation, negotiation, and the value of deliberation (ari-ari). However, the declining interest of the younger generation and the lack of structural support threaten the sustainability of this game, so adaptive and sustainable preservation efforts are needed.
